On second look
In class the other day we were looking at many blog and web designs to see what all was out in the digital world. Some were cool and some bla. Design Boom was one of the blog sites we looked at, four column grid, swiss design, yah I stop paying attention too. But on my return visit this site is filled with great stuff, countless interviews cool right ups and so on. I differently think everyone should spend a little time looking at this site.designboom.com

One of my design heros
Last quarter Sylvia assigned me stamps, a set of ten stamps in the style of a designer, I picked Paula Scher. After watching this video I was really inspired by her passion. Her type is awesome ” Illustrate with the type,” the theatre posters dance, type and image making a great visual. So yes I really admire her type integration. But I think every thing I’ve found on the web is great too. I’ve watched this video about 5 times and I thought I’d share it with you.

inspiration by Chip Kidd
I just got Chip Kidds book for Amazon, wow. I saw this guy speak a while back at How and he was really entertaining. With is random fucks and perverted comments. His book is over 400 pages and has a brief walk though of each project. And and awesome intro full of funny stuff. Yet again making the book designs more interesting. I really like his philosophy on design, text and image have there own space. It’s simple and relates to clean design. This book is cheap on Amazon buy about 15 dollars, it’s recommended.

Interview with Adam Jesberger
Homeboy what up. Mista shmoe. What can i do ya for today?
Answer questions that I’m going to make up now. What’s your favorite color.
U wanna video? We can do that if you don’t wanna type… Just working on something as we talk Mason gave no guidelines for this talk at all? Just go hassle some upper quarter bums?
Exactly, I just set this AIM thing up so I’m pressing buttons and seeing what happens. Typing better for me, it’s easier to save.
Wierd. About the interview i mean,
Yeah, he told us to read last quarters and everyone got a professional and ask business questions, so I guess mine will a relate to PC and the process.
Yeah man, lay it on me.
See how much b.s. I can make up to make us both sound good
Are sad that your time is almost up and you got to put on your fancy pants so your design can suffer with client restrictions
Hows that for size
Cant figure out what u just said to me, hah
Am i sad?
So when did you finally gain confidence is your work? Quarter, development, and so forth
Confidence has been a big issue i think. PC does a very good job of breaking down whatever existing egos or preconceived notions you have about your work. Everyone I think gets to a point where they break down and rediscover themselves and a new way to think and create. Some get it sooner some get it later. You’re basically having to rethink the way you think and it takes a toll. Once you’ve got it tho you gain a trust in yourself and the way you attack projects.
One of the biggest things in your time here is to learn to just take risks and experiment and purposely fuck up. School’s the place to do it and falling on your face is the fastest way to learn it seems
Where do you see your self after PC
Alot of designers are perfectionists and a project is never really ‘done’ you get a chance to revisit things at the end of your time but that isn’t really an excuse…. It’s not so much about getting a project perfect as just feeling good about it. The last thing you wanna do is overwork it and kern forever just ’cause the instructor has your thinking in circles.
After PC? Happily employed paying off my debt. hah!
….Is this helping any? Who knows
Are you leaning more toward print or interactive
Packaging, actually
Print and interactive both have their place and are damn fun to play with …But packaging is just natural
That’s something to really strive for here. To play with different mediums (print interactive motion packaging etc.) and see if you can find your niche. The one that you can create ideas for effortlessly that go over well. Most everyone finds theirs at some point (many find more than one). but that’s some good advice.
Find your strengths and play to them. It’s good to be well rounded but when you find what works just focus on making it the damn best you can. I the passion for your preferred medium will show and that’s what’ll get you where you want to be (plus storytelling and all that other fun)
I’m really looking forward to taking packaging everything I’ve ever made has fallen apart. You got any other good advise so I can make the most of my time
Take it all with a grain of salt. Alot of times they’ll break you down just to see if you can come up with a fresh idea at will. And be able to back your plays. If they want something blue and you think its better green just have a damn good reason for it and be able to (politely) push your point over theirs. Emphasis on polite I suppose. I’ve been rather blunt and it’s gotten me into some shit now and again (labeled difficult ask a round)
What do you think of Mr.. Poe and what did you get out of his classes
Call him Mason. Talk to him like you’d talk to any decent friend of yours. No pretensions there. If you can follow along he’ll give you the backside of flash top to bottom. He was lighting fast and all technical jargon when he first started but i hear he is getting better.
Ask LOTS of questions, make him stop and explain it to you if you are lost.. And always do the work. If he sees you are making an effort he’ll double it back to you. If you do nothing, you get nothing. Definitely think that’s the best bit i can say for his classes. Even if you fuck up and cant get anything to work just try and bring it in and he’ll help you out. Just gotta set him to a pace you can follow.
….Has any of this been useful to you (seriously now)
Hell yeah,
Hah! Is he going to see all this? If so I’ll through in some bullshit about him to fuck with his head in front of the class as you present this. Throw in*
I think so, talk away.
Naw, just give him shit about how goofy he looks in a beard (has he talked about whiskerino yet? Be prepared)
Oh yeah, it was an hour tangent about how cool it was
It’ll keep coming up. What quarter are you?
Well I guess I’ll try and grow moustache. The big # 2. I get to learn how to think and hear about all the cool classes every one else is taking.
Yeah man. The breakdown and epiphany thing usually happen around 4-5 quarter. Usually write off 1-2 quarter as just getting balance i how things run around there. You’re doing good. Once you are out of 1st quarter it just gets better. Get Indesign and some other shit under your belt, find some typefaces… It all starts to move
# 2 is f*ing slow
Everything is different. Different instructors run different ways. If it is slow now it’ll speed up real fast around week 8 when you realize you only have two weeks left to make something.
I here second is the slow quarter and everything is madding after that. I got some thumbs to take care of for class tonight. I appreciate the advise and pointers.

Me and Homie took a trip down to Barns and Noble earlier today. We always duck into the Starbucks and grab some coffee before perusing. In my search for some insperation I found this book, Seventy-nine Short Essays on Design. The index sold me on this book, with the great list of designers. So far I’ve read 3 entries, but I’m into this. I’ll read some more and post some more, and most likely recomend it but first let me read some more.

Thanks Guy?

I just finished whatching “The Century of the Self”. Wow, yeah to Bernays, thanks for the mass consumer market. This means that I can have a job in design. But Fuck you, thats the punk rocker in my. Making the weak minded people that make up society that are only satisfied by materail needs. And of course there must be a quote, “Real Democracy can not exist without Capitalism,” Bernays, and another quote ” I have a bone to pick with Capitalism, and a few to brake,” Refused.
Really I’m torn on how to feel about all this. This is modern America and what I know of life, but every problem with our world stems form all this.
